Oscar Tuazon Biography

Oscar Tuazon is an American artist whose innovative work blurs the boundaries between sculpture, architecture, and installation. Born in 1975 in Seattle, Washington, Tuazon has developed a practice that is deeply rooted in a do-it-yourself ethos, often using industrial materials such as steel, glass, wood, and concrete to create large-scale structures and spaces that invite viewer interaction and engagement. Tuazon's early life was marked by a unique upbringing; he was born Oscar Hansen in a geodesic dome built by his parents in the woods at Indianola, Kitsap County, Washington. This unconventional childhood environment would later influence his artistic practice, which often reflects on the relationship between humanity and the built environment. Tuazon attended Deep Springs College, an experience that further shaped his collaborative and community-oriented approach to art-making. He continued his education at Cooper Union and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York. In the mid-1990s, Tuazon met and married Lan Tuazon in New York, adopting her surname after their marriage. Although the couple later divorced, he retained the name Tuazon. His brother, Elias Hansen, is also an artist and frequent collaborator, and together they have delivered works that combine their distinct artistic visions. Tuazon's professional career began with a stint working in the studio of architect and artist Vito Acconci, which provided him with a foundational understanding of the intersection between art and architecture. After moving to Paris in 2007, Tuazon's career took off as he began exhibiting widely across Europe. His work has been featured in prestigious events such as the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Biennial, and numerous solo and group shows around the world. His art is included in major collections, including that of Charles Saatchi. Critics have often noted Tuazon's non-conformist approach to artistic practice, which plays at the juncture of architecture, sculpture, and performance. His work has been described as haunting, pitting robust egos against raw and fragile subjectivities. This tension is evident in his inventive use of materials and the way his structures often draw out the complex relationship between individuals and their surroundings. In 2013, Tuazon moved from France to the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles with his three children and wife Dorothée Perret, a former editor at Purple Magazine who now helms the art magazine "Paris, LA." His personal life, like his art, is characterized by a series of rich collaborations and a deep engagement with his immediate environment. Tuazon's work is characterized by a hands-on approach, where the construction process itself becomes a performative part of the artwork. He often references the techniques of Land Art and Minimalism in improvised collaborations with designers, engineers, and builders. His sculptures, often quasi-functional objects or models of other spaces, foreground their own means of construction, inviting viewers to consider the act of making as integral to the experience of the artwork. Solo exhibitions dedicated to Tuazon's work have been held at institutions across the United States and Europe, including the Kunsthalle Bergen, Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Kunst Museum Winterthur, Aspen Museum of Art, Bellevue Art Museum, Hammer Museum, Consortium, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, and Museum Ludwig. His work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions worldwide, such as the Chicago Architecture Biennial, Skulptur Projekte Münster, Documenta 14, Triennale d'art contemporain de Beaufort, and the Whitney Biennial. Tuazon has been selected for several public commissions, including "Un Pont" for the Nouveaux Commanditaires of the Fondation de France and "People" for the Public Art Fund at Brooklyn Bridge Park. In 2017, he was given carte blanche by FIAC to present an in situ project "Une colonne d'eau" on the prestigious Place Vendôme. In addition to his sculptural work, Tuazon is actively engaged in environmental and community projects. He is working towards the foundation of Cedar Spring Water School, a functional work of public art that aims to bring awareness to water politics in the rural West and the significance of water as a global political resource. Oscar Tuazon's work is held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Marciano Art Foundation in Los Angeles, Zabludowicz Collection in London, and many other prestigious institutions. His practice continues to challenge and expand the definitions of contemporary sculpture and architecture, making him one of the most compelling artists of his generation.
